Bound In Yellow- workshop for Artists' Book Forum, Artspace Mackay

Bound In Yellow- art workshop for  Artists' Book Forum  Mackay 12th April 2010

Bound In Yellow - Collaborative Wallpaper Swatch Book Workshop

This one-day workshop complements ‘The Assembling Book as a democratic vehicle’. Its focus will be the creation of a collaborative publication, Bound In Yellow, produced in an edition of 25. The edition will take the form of a wallpaper swatch book. Workshop participants will create their own set of pages to be included in the edition. The workshop will take the form of a working artist studio, with participants contributing their art making skills to the collective experience.

The title Bound in Yellow is a reference to ‘yellow’ as a concept. Yellow was adopted by the 19th French decadent movement to indicate artifice and “immorality” and the colour was used in publications such as the Yellow Book periodical of the 1890s. In Osar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the book that has a major corrupting influence on Dorian is described as ‘the yellow book’. In Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow the characters are condemned by the yellow sign. The colour was also used as a trade mark for Italian mystery novels, known as Giallo, and is beautifully referenced in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wall-Paper
